Is antiperspirant a solution to excessive sweating?

The disorder of excessive sweating is a very cumbersome disorder for the individual who suffers from it. Excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis is the irregular function of the sweat glands of the body. Human sweating is the natural mechanism of the body to control the temperature of the body like other animals. The human body has two kinds of sweat glands that produce sweat of different composition and the sweat when it comes in contact with the air it gives a cooling effect to the body, thus the body has a very unique thermoregulatory mechanism. But the condition in hyperhidrosis is very different and the sweat that is produced in excess instead of leaving the individual cool actually makes him sweat more because of the nervousness that he/she has the problem of hyperhidrosis. The causes of hyperhidrosis are not yet known fully but the chances of its being hereditary are fifty percent according to a study. Hyperhidrosis runs in the families. There are many other medical complications like hyperthyroidism which can be the cause of hyperhidrosis. The hyperhidrosis condition generates many other socially embarrassing problems for the sufferer and he always has to be very careful about his wet and sweating palms while meeting and greeting people.

The treatment of the disorder varies according to its concentration and its extent. Eight percent of the American population is affected by this disorder and they go at any length to overcome the embarrassing social consequences of this disorder. The use of anti perspirant is the primary product that people look at for any relief from the hyperhidrosis. The anti aspirant is a spray that contain Aluminum chloride solution which has been seen as an effective tool in fighting against the body odor. The concentration of the solution has to be at least fifteen percent in the effective treatment of the hyperhidrosis. Antiperspirants work by reducing the sweat production from the sweat glands. But unfortunately most patients with hyperhidrosis do not find the commercial antiperspirants or deodorants effective enough. But the Aluminum Chloride in high concentration found in over the counter products is seen as a very effective anti perspirant.

The anti aspirant treats only the milder kinds or forms of hyperhidrosis and proves ineffective in individuals who have a sever form of the disorder. The anti perspirant is only treatment and not a cure for hyperhidrosis.
