Homocystine is sulfur-containing amino acid that causes homocystinuria, which in simple terms is an inborn error of enzymes and metabolism. Cardio-vascular diseases and mental retardation are the two primary ailments that homocystine brings about. Homocystine also spelt as homocysteine is found in small amounts in the blood. Too much of homocystine in the blood causes build up of fatty substances in the arteries. This makes the heart receive lesser quantity of blood or faulty blood flow from the other body parts.

Homocystine and the heart

The heart is an organ that is continuously working pumping out blood. Heart valves linked with arteries, tubes that supply pure blood from the heart to the different parts of the body and veins, tubes that bring impure blood from the different parts of the body to the heart. When levels of homocystine increase, they tend to form clots in the veins, which can restrict blood flow. Deep Vein Thrombosis occurs in such cases and can prove fatal if adequate care is not taken at the right time. Clogging of veins can also result in pressure on the heart and lungs and can affect the normal working of the heart valves over a period of time.

Increased Homocystine Levels spell danger

Congenital heart diseases have been linked to increased homocystine levels during pregnancy leading to complications to the child after birth resulting in arteries clogging, growth retardation, stillbirth and also other heart-related diseases. High blood pressure is another disease millions are suffering from. What they probably are unaware of is that homocystine levels in their blood could be at an alarmingly high level causing them to be sick.

Reduce the risk of disease

Nutrients and foods that help reduce the accumulation of more homocystine can help in keeping the heart a happier one and less prone to disease. Exercise and calorie consumption in the right quantity gives you the advantage of sustaining your heart and preventing cardiovascular ailments from troubling you at early stages of your life. Living a stress free life also helps. Regular check-ups with your family doctor or a medico can be of immense help. Homocystine levels can be controlled with the help of medicines and regular exercise and diet routines.
