Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating is the problem which affects nearly 8 million Americans and the problem is very widely faced by many individuals. The normal function of sweating is regulating the body temperature and this job is done by a series of sensory signals from the hypothalamus in the brain to the sympathetic nerves in the chest cavity. On the orders of the hypothalamus the nerves directs the sweat glands to produce sweat so that the temperature remains constant. This mechanism is itself very effective for the thermoregulation but when it goes wrong it wracks a real havoc for the sufferer. In the hyperhidrosis condition the individual perspires without any triggering and the sweat is more concentrated in the palms of the hand, the feet, and the face. It then becomes very uncomfortable for the sufferer even to have a shake hand from his/her colleagues or friends. "The minute they wake up, they sweat," says Dr. Flor Mayoral, a dermatologist and hyperhidrosis expert from Miami, when the condition is such the patient has no alternative to stay away from social occasions and this makes the disorder a big problem for the sufferers.

Effects of excessive sweating

The abnormal sweating in hyperhidrosis causes many embarrassing situations for the patient one of which is the problem of having body odor, which is found in many sufferers of hyperhidrosis. People think that it is the sweat that is smelly but in reality the sweat is in itself odorless and it is the bacteria in the air that make the sweat disintegrate and cause smell. Body odor gets more aggravated in individuals with hyperhidrosis because the excessive sweat from the body constantly comes in contact with the air and the bacteria can thrive on the skin and produce foul smell. Skin maceration from constant perspiration leads to wetness and it then can leads to the growth of bacteria. Excessive perspiration also encourages the growth of fungus.

The dress fabric that one wears can have really dramatic effects in the hyperhidrosis condition. As the use of baby powder and baking soda helps to absorb the excess of sweat the fabric can also do the same job and may give some relief to the individuals suffering from hyperhidrosis. A white cotton short can be the solution from getting rid off perspiration stain and body odor.
