Insomnia is usually defined as a failure to fall asleep or get a required amount of sleep each night. Many people that suffer from insomnia can be up for hours until they fall asleep and then can awake only a few hours after they finally fell asleep. While most causes of insomnia are due to stress and psychological issues it can be treated with prescription medication and over the counter remedies.
Sleep apnea is the inability to get the required amount of oxygen in your lungs during sleep. In effect, you stop breathing once or many times during the night. Most people can't get oxygen into their lungs due to a blockage in the throat or mouth. Many sufferers stop breathing for a few seconds or over a minute and they can awake in the middle of the night dozens of times. These interruptions stop the individual from receiving a well rested, deep sleep. Sleep apnea can be treated with the help of a CPAP which is a device that forces air into the lungs. So if you or a loved one may be suffering from a sleeping disorder talk to your doctor about a possible diagnosis and treatments available.
