What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Mean?

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when median nerve, which runs from the forearm into hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. The median nerve controls sensations to the palm side of thumb and fingers as well as impulses to some small muscles in the hand that allow the fingers and thumb to move. The carpal tunnel is a narrow, rigid passageway of ligament and bones at the base of the hands three fourth house the median nerve and tendons. Sometime the blood starts clotting. The result may be pain, weakness or numbness in the hand and wrist, radiating up the arm. Since painful sensations may indicate other conditions, carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common and widely known in which the body's peripheral nerves are compressed.

Symptoms

First and early symptoms include tingling in the hand, which may develop to such an extent that the affected individual with carpal tunnel syndrome can complain of aching, burning, pins and needles and numbness in hand. Some notice these symptoms only in thumb, index and middle fingers of the hand, while others have problems throughout the hand as well.

Common in Diabetes

Diabetes is a life-long disease marked by high levels of the sugar in the blood. It can be caused by too little insulin that is a hormone produced by the pancreas to regulate blood sugar resistance to insulin or both. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a very common feature of diabetic neuropathy. One of the major complications of diabetes is carpal tunnel syndrome. Neuropathy is decreased or distorted nerve function. It particularly affects sensation. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, weakness and burning sensations as well which starts usually from the fingers and toes and moving up to the arms and legs. About 6% of patients with carpal tunnel syndrome have diabetes. Diabetes may also play a role in the development of carpal tunnel syndrome, as may hormonal changes. People with diabetes have high blood glucose. This is because their pancreas does not make enough insulin. This can be the reason that insulin stop forming on its own and person become diabetic.
