Bird flu: an outline
Bird flu is basically an infection of birds with various forms of influenza virus. All the strains of viruses are not pathogenic and cause only mild symptom but some forms are highly virulent and cause severe complication. Migratory birds are highly responsible for the infection in the domestic poultry stocks. Infected birds carry the virus in their saliva and it also come along with their feces and thus domestic birds coming in contact with their saliva or feces get infected. The growing concern for bird flu is also due to the fact that the various strains of influenza viruses also undergo genetic changes and can affect the human being.
Impact of bird flu in 2005
The outbreak of bird flu is quite evident from the fact that it is caused by various pathogenic form of influenza virus. In 2005 there was severe outbreak and caused mass destruction in the Asian countries. The various countries affected by bird flu are discussed below:-
1. China: China was also badly affected by bird flu and it was due to the negligence of the common people and the vendor who ignored it initially and went on selling the infected chicken. As a result lots of people were infected and finally government announced the vaccination campaign and in this way they were able to save million of people who were about to infected
2. Vietnam: In March 2005 15 cases of human infection with H5N1 type of virus is detected and by the end of April it increases to 60.
3. Cambodia: The first case of bird flu human to human transmission is detected in February 2005 and slowly there was increase in the number of human beings getting infected and thus government was compelled to initiate the vaccination campaign.
4. Turkey: The presence of bird flu was also confirmed in turkey when H5N1 strain of influenza virus is found in the Turkish poultry. The Turkish government immediately ordered for destruction oh the infected chickens in order to stop the disease from spreading further. They also started the vaccination campaign in the nearby villages.
5. Indonesia: Human being infected with bird flu in Indonesia is confirmed in June 2005.The man is examined and antibodies are found in his blood for H1N5 strain. The disease is transmitted into his body from sick chickens.
