Backdrop

Alexander technique is a form of alternative therapy and gets its name from Frederick Alexander (1865 – 1955). He was an Australian actor who found out one day that he is losing his voice. He then discovered the solution to this problem by improving his posture.
Thus, the Alexander technique is used for curing a number of medical discomforting conditions like headache, back pain, neck pain etc.
It is a part of the curriculum of performance schools of voice, music, acting, dance, and some Olympic sports.

The Technique

While working, a person is accustomed to a typical posture that provides him the best position for good working. It involves sitting in the same way for hours together. His hands, shoulders, neck, head, back, legs etc. are in a specific position favorable for his type of work. But in reality, they may all be unsynchronized. They, unknowingly, remain to be in the same condition over a continuous period of time and result into stiffness, pain or similar problems.

The Alexander technique involves working of the body and mind in harmoniously, in unity. It involves ease of movement, to avoid stiffness; improved balance, to avoid stress on one part of body; and less muscular tension, to avoid strain on muscles and joints.
This technique is regarded by the United Kingdom National Health Service as an alternative and complementary management to for many medical complaints. It helps in back problems, speech problems, voice loss, avoiding Repetitive Strain Injury, balance or mobility problems etc.

Alexander teachers perceive, observe and analyze the habitual motion pattern, including every little detail. They then give comments and advice to improve the situation. The students of Alexander technique then make the necessary changes and difference in their behavioral pattern.

After consciously practicing the advice, changes are evident in their voice, stamina etc.
Most of the students of this technique are satisfied, but some may face paradoxical situations. They may get into the habit of losing interest or lack of attention or decreasing concentration while working. This may happen due to repetition of same conscious efforts to constantly change and improve the posture and habits, in order to bring the body and soul in tandem. This process takes place just like the part of body or skin losing sensation on repeated rubbing.

Caution

Though desirable for most of the people, this technique has its own probable disadvantages. It should also be remembered that the Alexander Technique is an addition to traditional medical treatment schedules and must not replace it.
